Position to Term Rule GCSE Maths
A position to term rule uses the term number to calculate the value of a term in a sequence. This is closely linked to nth term work.
Example
If the rule is 4n + 1, then the 5th term is 4 × 5 + 1 = 21.
Exam tip: Be clear whether n means the position number or the term value.
Common mistake: Students sometimes substitute the wrong number for n.
