Solving Equations with Brackets GCSE Maths
Equations with brackets are very common in GCSE Maths. The first step is usually to expand the brackets carefully.
Example
Solve:
3(x + 2) = 18
Expand:
3x + 6 = 18
Subtract 6:
3x = 12
Divide by 3:
x = 4
Exam tip: Keep your algebra neat and write one step per line.
Common mistake: Students often forget to multiply every term inside the bracket.
